How is HRA Calculated in India?

The steps of calculating HRA in India are as follows:

    Step 1: Determine HRA Eligibility

You must be a salaried person who receives HRA as part of your wage package in order to be eligible for HRA. Additionally, you need to be renting a place to live and paying the rent on it.

    Step 2: Gather Information

Gather the relevant details, including the amount of HRA you receive, the actual rent you pay, and the location of your home.

Step 3: Calculate the Eligible HRA

The lowest of the following three criteria will be considered for determining the qualifying HRA amount for tax exemption:

    1. Actual HRA Received: The total amount of HRA your company actually paid you.

    2. Actual Rent Paid - 10% of Salary: Add your dearness allowance (DA) to 10% of your base pay. Subtract this sum from the rent you actually paid. The HRA that is eligible is the balance.

    3. Calculate 50% of your basic pay plus DA. c. 50% of pay. The smaller of these two sums will be regarded as the qualifying HRA if you reside in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or Chennai), or 40% if you do not.

    Step 4: Claim HRA Exemption

Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act allows you to deduct the qualifying HRA amount from your total taxable income.

Remember that you must present the required rent receipts and other supporting documentation as evidence of your rent payment in order to claim HRA exemption. Additionally, you must supply your landlord's PAN information if the annual rent paid is over Rs. 1 lakh.

To effectively claim the HRA exemption and prevent any tax-related complications, it is crucial to utilise the proper HRA calculation method and maintain compliance with tax legislation. You may make this procedure simpler and get precise answers for your HRA computation by using an HRA calculator.

    HRA Calculation

Let's understand HRA calculation with an example:

Suppose you receive a basic salary of Rs. 40,000 per month, and your HRA is Rs. 15,000 per month. You pay a monthly rent of Rs. 12,000, and you live in a non-metro city.

To calculate the HRA exemption, follow these steps:

    1. Actual HRA received: Rs. 15,000 per month = Rs. 1,80,000 per year
    2. 50% of basic salary: 50% of Rs. 40,000 per month = Rs. 20,000 per month = Rs. 2,40,000 per year
    3. Rent paid minus 10% of basic salary: (Rs. 12,000 - 10% of Rs. 40,000) per month = Rs. 8,000 per month = Rs. 96,000 per year
    4. The least of the above amounts will be Rs. 96,000 per year.
    5. Now, the actual HRA received is Rs. 1,80,000 per year (Rs. 15,000 x 12 months).
    6. The remaining amount that can be claimed for HRA exemption is Rs. 1,80,000 - Rs. 96,000 = Rs. 84,000 per year.

Thus, in this example, you can claim an HRA exemption of Rs. 84,000 per year while filing your income tax return. The rest of the HRA amount will be considered as taxable income.
