The calculation used to determine how much tax must be paid to the government takes into consideration a number of variables, including the individual's income, deductions, exemptions, and tax levels.
The income tax calculator is normally simple to use and asks the user to enter a number of details, including:
Gross Annual revenue: This sums up all sources of revenue, including wage, business, rental, and interest income.

How to Calculate Income Tax?
It can be a difficult procedure to calculate income tax because it entails so many phases. A general advice on how to figure out income tax for people who are salaried in India is provided below:
Step 1 : Finding Gross Income
Step 2: Claim Deductions
Step 3: Select the Proper Tax Level
The government-set tax slabs determine the income tax rates. There are now three tax brackets available to individual taxpayers:
up to 2.5 lakh rupees: (No tax) Nil
2,50,001 to 5,000 rupees: 5%
between Rs. 5,001 and Rs. 10,000: 20%
30% beyond Rs. 10,00,000
Step 4: Apply the Tax on the Relevant Slab
Determine the tax amount using the appropriate tax rate for each slab. If your taxable income is Rs. 6,00,000, for instance, you will pay 5% on the portion of your income that falls between Rs. 2,50,001 and Rs. 5,00,000 (i.e., Rs. 12,500) and 20% on the portion of your income that falls between Rs. 5,00,001 and Rs. 6,00,000 (i.e., Rs. 20,000). In this situation, there will be a total of Rs. 32,500 in income tax due.
Step 5: Include a cess for health and education
Step 6: File TDS and rebate claims
The amount of any refunds you are entitled to, such as the Section 87A Rebate (for taxpayers with income up to Rs. 5,00,000), should be deducted from your overall tax obligation. Consideration should also be given to any tax deducted at source (TDS) that has already been taken out by your employer or other sources.
Your income tax liability for the fiscal year is the total amount determined after completing all of these stages.
Formula to Calculate Income Tax?
The formula to calculate income tax for individuals in India depends on the applicable tax slab. As of my last update in September 2021, the following are the tax slabs for individual taxpayers:
- For people under 60 years old:
- Up to Rs. 2.5 lakh: Nil (No tax)
- 2,50,001 to Rs. 5,00,000: 5%
- 5,00,001 to Rs. 10,00,000: 20%
- Above Rs. 10,00,000: 30%
- For people 60 years of age and older but under 80 (Senior Citizens): Up to Rs. 3 lakhs: Nil (No tax)
- 3,00,001 to Rs. 5,00,000: 5%
- 5,00,001 to Rs. 10,00,000: 20%
- Above Rs. 10,00,000: 30%
- For individuals aged 80 years and above (Super Senior Citizens):
- Up to Rs. 5 lakhs: Nil (No tax)
- 5,00,001 to Rs. 10,00,000: 20%
- Above Rs. 10,00,000: 30%
The income tax formula for individuals is as follows:
Tax Payable = (Income - Deductions) x Applicable Tax Rate + Health and Education Cess
Where:
- Income refers to the total taxable income for the financial year.
- Deductions include eligible deductions claimed under various sections of the Income Tax Act, like Section 80C, 80D, 80G, etc.
- Applicable Tax Rate is based on the taxpayer's age and falls under the respective tax slabs mentioned above.
- Health and Education Cess is 4% of the income tax calculated.
